Or that 10-mile a day challenge.<\/p>\n<p>And you know what, as a proponent of habits, I\u2019m all for it (insert your own medical disclaimer here).<\/p>\n<p>Seriously, the world wouldn\u2019t be the place it is without irrational optimists.<\/p>\n<p>And, riffing on a famous quotation, George Bernard Shaw did say: \u201cThose who say it is impossible should not interrupt those who are doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Semi-ballistic<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If you have just set up something grandiose in the way of a new year\u2019s resolution, then you\u2019re using a principle from naval architecture.<\/p>\n<p>Planes don\u2019t achieve flight by jumping \u2013 they generate slightly more upward force than gravity exerts by pushing their carefully shaped wings faster and faster along the runway.<\/p>\n<p>But sometimes the runway isn\u2019t long enough for that speed to be reached. So aircraft carrier designers put a ramp at the end, effectively shooting the aircraft into the air. It\u2019s called semi-ballistic take-off.<\/p>\n<p>It helps!<\/p>\n<p>Your friends may be scoffing, but there\u2019s reason in your madness. You&#8217;re using the excitement of the Fresh Start to get things going fast.<\/p>\n<p>But what happens next is key!<\/p>\n<p>You have two options.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Create such a powerful system of support around you that you can maintain that angle of take-off. Eseentially, here you are making the impossible possible. This is what coach Greg Whyte does with celebrities so they can swim the English channel at very short notice. He makes the impossible possible with a big team of physios, doctors, logistics, sponsorship experts and himself, a master coach.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Level out. This means bringing down your nose and getting up enough speed and momentum by sacrificing that steep angle of ascent. In other words, make your habit sustainable. Habits are an itteration game. Keeping it up is everything.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><strong>Three hacks that will help<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Get a buddy.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Strava looked at 70 million athletes in 2019. Those who trained with another person ran 20% farther.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Join an event, challenge or race<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Again, Strava saw that 88% of those who signed up for an event were maintaining their new regime six months after starting<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong>Join a club or a network<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This is another decisive factor identified by Strava.<\/p>\n<p>If you can, compound all of these.<\/p>\n<p>And don\u2019t judge yourself either way.<\/p>\n<p>Hope isn\u2019t always rational, yet it\u2019s part of the human spirit.<\/p>\n<p>And our ability to maximises our chances together is considered our evolutionary advantage over other species.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Levelling out<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019re considering levelling out in time. Consider this approach based on the acronym SAME.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>S<\/strong>. Simple\u2026 make it easy to recall<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>A<\/strong>. Answerable\u2026 make it supportable, meaning you can tell yourself or a friend in one word whether it got done<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>M<\/strong>. Meaningful\u2026 don\u2019t go too far in the other direction. Make it significant enough to move the needle<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>E<\/strong>. Even on a rainy day\u2026 restarting a habit takes more energy than starting one, so make it something you can keep even when all the odds are against you.<\/p>\n<p>This new year, I hope you fly.
